Looking for Langston

New on DVD:Looking for Langston

On 27 June, bfi Video releases award-winning British film-maker Isaac Julien's Looking for Langston on DVD (previously only available on the VHS Gay Classics). Both critically acclaimed and controversial, the film is a lyrical and poetic consideration of the life of revered Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes.

Julien's film invokes Hughes as a black gay cultural icon, against an impressionistic, atmospheric setting that parallels a Harlem speakeasy of the 1920s with an 80s London nightclub. Extracts from Hughes' poetry are interwoven with the work of cultural figures from the 1920s and beyond, constructing a lyrical and multilayered narrative. The film combines archival footage with newly staged set pieces, fantasy sequences, and an imagined love story. The result is a beautiful and ultimately celebratory piece about artistic expression and the nature of black gay desire.

Beautifully presented in deluxe packaging, numerous extra features include a commentary by Isaac Julien and Director of Photography Nina Kellgren and a 48-page booklet containing essays, director interview, reviews and biographies.

Pride: Why Not Steward This Year?

Pride's volunteer organisers are looking for more volunteers from the community to help run the Pride London Parade, Rally and Cabaret on Saturday 2nd July.

They are recruiting particularly hard this year, in case the Live 8 concert on the same day affects steward and attendance numbers.

Stewards help ensure the safety and smooth running of the day by helping with crowd, pedestrian and road control, helping disabled people participate fully, and many more essential jobs.

The Pride Parade has a long history of being stewarded by the community, this in turn is respected by the Met Police. They recognise the organisation and efficiency, and are more than happy for Pride to manage things themselves. However, that means recruiting in big numbers. This year they are aiming for around 450 stewards, as the Parade is increasing in size.

Additional stewarding is needed for a Cabaret in Leicester Square, as well as the Rally in Trafalgar Square.

You don’t need any prior experience, as you’ll be part of a team, and you'll get some training. If you’re stewarding the parade, you would be needed from around 9 or 10am until around 3 or 4pm.

As a “thank you” all volunteers get a Pride Privilege Card, which gets you a range of discounts for the next 12 months. These include cinemas, gay pubs and clubs, and lots of other businesses.

You can find more information on Pride's website at www.pridelondon.org.

Get Your Angry Inch ...

... tickets that is!

The much heralded stage production of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH opens tonight for a limited run at Heaven Nightclub.

Rolling Stone called it "The first rock musical that really rocks."

Would you undergo a sex change operation to marry your Amercian G.I. boyfriend and flee to the West? That's exactly what Berlin born Hansel did thus becoming Hedwig.

Well as you and I know from the film of the same name in 2001, nothing quite worked out like it was supposed to. So years later we find Hedwig leading her rock band around the U.S., telling her life story through a series of gigs as she crosses paths with a one time lover that stole all her songs.

Olivier Award winning David Bedella of Jerry Spring Satan and Holby City fame stars as Hedwig for just 13 performances, so get your tickets now. Surely one not to miss.
