Pride: Why Not Steward This Year?
Pride's volunteer organisers are looking for more volunteers from the community to help run the Pride London Parade, Rally and Cabaret on Saturday 2nd July.
They are recruiting particularly hard this year, in case the Live 8 concert on the same day affects steward and attendance numbers.
Stewards help ensure the safety and smooth running of the day by helping with crowd, pedestrian and road control, helping disabled people participate fully, and many more essential jobs.
The Pride Parade has a long history of being stewarded by the community, this in turn is respected by the Met Police. They recognise the organisation and efficiency, and are more than happy for Pride to manage things themselves. However, that means recruiting in big numbers. This year they are aiming for around 450 stewards, as the Parade is increasing in size.
Additional stewarding is needed for a Cabaret in Leicester Square, as well as the Rally in Trafalgar Square.
You don’t need any prior experience, as you’ll be part of a team, and you'll get some training. If you’re stewarding the parade, you would be needed from around 9 or 10am until around 3 or 4pm.
As a “thank you” all volunteers get a Pride Privilege Card, which gets you a range of discounts for the next 12 months. These include cinemas, gay pubs and clubs, and lots of other businesses.
